MSP Peer Groups: Why Every MSP Owner Needs One and How to Find the Right One

One of the most underrated growth tools for MSP owners is a peer group. Not a mastermind with a guru at the front. Not a vendor-sponsored roundtable. A genuine peer group of MSP owners at a similar stage, in non-competing markets, who are willing to be honest about what is working and what is not.

I have been in IT since 1997. I have watched MSP owners try to figure out growth in isolation, and I have watched what happens when they find a real peer community. The difference is real.

Why MSP Owners Need Peer Groups

Running an MSP is isolating in a specific way. You cannot talk to your employees about the things that keep you up at night. You cannot talk to your clients about your business challenges. You cannot talk to your vendors without them trying to sell you something. And most of your friends and family do not understand what you do well enough to be useful.

A peer group of other MSP owners solves that problem. They understand the business model, the client dynamics, the team challenges, and the owner psychology. They have been through the same things you are going through, or they are going through them right now.

What Makes a Good MSP Peer Group

  • Non-competing markets. You cannot be fully honest with a peer who is competing for the same clients. Geographic separation is the minimum requirement for a functional peer group.
  • Similar stage. A $500K MSP and a $5M MSP have different problems. The most useful peer groups are made up of owners at a similar revenue stage and growth trajectory.
  • Commitment to honesty. A peer group where everyone presents their best face is just a networking event. The value comes from being willing to say what is actually hard.
  • Regular cadence. Monthly is better than quarterly. Consistency builds the trust that makes honesty possible.
  • No vendors. Vendor-sponsored peer groups have a conflict of interest built in. The best peer groups are owner-funded and vendor-free.

Where to Find MSP Peer Groups

Several organizations run MSP peer groups, including HTG Peer Groups (now part of CompTIA), ASCII Group, and various regional MSP associations. The Rewired MSP community at RewiredMSP.com is also a resource for MSP owners looking to connect with peers who share the Rewired MSP values of trust-based partnerships, scalable systems, and people-first culture.

The books in the Rewired MSP series , Rewired MSP, vCIO Rewired, and Near Miss , give MSP owners a shared framework and vocabulary that makes peer conversations more productive.
